Discover Killarney: A Vibrant Vancouver Neighbourhood with Affordable Homes and Great Amenities

Killarney is one of Vancouver's last neighbourhoods to be developed, maintaining a unique, undisturbed identity. Often referred to as the Emerald District, it offers a distinct blend of modern living and community charm.

Schools in the Area

Killarney offers a variety of educational options for families with young children. Notable elementary schools include Tecumseh (E 41st), Waverley, and Sir Charles Kingsford-Smith (Elliot Street), as well as Dr. George M. Weir (Rupert Street) and Dr. H.N. MacCorkindale (Battison Street). Additional schools are located nearby in Champlain Heights. For older students, Killarney Secondary and David Thompson Secondary serve the neighbourhood.

Location

Killarney is bounded by Argyll Street to the west and Boundary Road to the east, stretching from E 41st Avenue in the north to E 54th Avenue in the south. This central location offers easy access to the rest of Vancouver.

Housing Market History

Killarney’s real estate is characterized by modern planning and design, featuring wide boulevards, tree-lined streets, and a pedestrian-friendly atmosphere. The neighbourhood offers a diverse mix of housing types, including single-family homes, row houses, and walk-up apartments. Housing prices are relatively affordable, making it an attractive option for both buyers and renters.

Recreation Opportunities

Killarney is home to the popular Killarney Community Centre, a modern facility with a large gymnasium, ice rink, and fitness centre. The community centre is located within Killarney Park, which offers a variety of outdoor activities including ball diamonds, soccer fields, a running track, and an off-leash dog park. The Killarney Skating Club, part of Skate Canada, provides figure skating programs and private lessons. Nearby Nanaimo Park and Gordon Park also provide ample green space and sports fields. For even more recreational options, Central Park is located just a short distance away in Burnaby.

Restaurants & Shopping

While Killarney doesn’t have a major commercial hub, there are small retail outlets like Killarney Centre on E 49th, and a few independent shops scattered along major streets. For more extensive shopping, the Collingwood area to the north offers a lively commercial district along Kingsway, while Champlain Mall is located in Champlain Heights. For a larger shopping experience, Metropolis at Metrotown is just a short drive or bus ride away in Burnaby.

Transportation Options

Most Killarney residents commute by car, with major thoroughfares such as Victoria Drive, Boundary Road, and Rupert Street providing easy access to the rest of Vancouver. Kingsway and SE Marine Drive are also accessible from the neighbourhood, offering connections to downtown and beyond. While Killarney lacks direct access to the Skytrain, several bus routes along Rupert, Tyne, E 41st, and E 49th provide convenient transit options, including connections to Joyce Station on the Expo Line. Additionally, bike lanes along Vivian Drive and E 45th Avenue support alternative transportation. Pedestrian traffic in the area is generally local and relaxed.
